Bourbon Society of Baton Rouge Discussion

Bourbon Society of Baton Rouge Discussion

Instead of our normal Bourbon Information Monday’s, we wanted to have a dialog with everyone instead. We started BSoBR in May 2015 and have had the absolute best time with it. We never imagined we would have the success we’ve had with this group. I honestly didn’t think that four years later I would still be running this group. I didn’t think we would be able to kick it off the ground. You all have been following us through our ups and our downs. We can’t thank you enough for all the support you’ve given us up to date. I hope that we have earned your trust and that you all are interested in going down a new path with us.

About a month ago, we started to consider changing the way we do membership within the Society. Jacob and I (the co-founders) have shared the majority of the costs with this group since our origination. It has been our pleasure to get the group to where it is today. We have a solid base of people who engaged and are interested in what we do. With a more formal dues-paying membership structure, we think we can truly accomplish more exciting things.

I don’t want to go over specifics today. We are still working on everything. As a dues-paying member, I will tell you that you will get some benefits from a few of the places around town that we frequent. We are also working on doing a BSoBR barrel pick. We have a retailer who we are partnering with, we just need to find the right barrel first. It will be several months away but the option to help us sample and pick a barrel of bourbon will be on the table.

Most importantly, the raffle system we have will change. We normally give away 2-4 bottles of whiskey per event just for showing up. We will no longer have door prizes open to the general public. The raffle will be reserved for our dues paying members. However, a large portion of the dues we take in will be going straight toward bottles for the raffles. Depending on how the next few months go, we may end up raffling off 5 or more bottles at each event or we may raffle off more expensive bottles. We aren’t sure what the plan will be but know that the bulk of the dues will go towards the raffles. There will be a lot more to this when it’s all said and done. I’m really excited about what we have come up with so far, and I think you all will be too. I also want to make clear that every dollar that BSoBR collects will stay within BSoBR and the operating costs & activities of BSoBR.

For today, I just want your opinions. Is this something you’re interested in?  Would you be open to taking the next step with BSoBR? What type of member benefits do you want? What more do you want out of a Bourbon Society? Please let me know your thoughts below. We really appreciate your feedback!

  1. Good Evening,
I think this idea is an appropriate/neccessary step to grow the Society to the next level. Bourbon and Whiskey enthusiasts tend to not have an issue with paying dues if the percieved value is there. You have already covered what the dues will be used for so I doubt you have any issues taking this next step.

I am moving to BR at the end of the month and have been following the Society on social media for awhile now. It has been a little unclear of the direction or overall participation but this news is exciting for what is in the pipeline. I hope to get involved and enjoy the hobby with fellow enthusiasts!

    1. Awesome, glad you’re excited! Be sure to be in BR by the 31st, we have a Whistlepig tasting in the works. Going to post about it later this week! Thank you for your comments though. I do think this is the next best step for BSoBR.

  2. I think it’s absolutely time to move to this. Y’all have carried the burden long enough. I appreciate everything y’all have done and look forward to continued growth 🥃

    1. Thank you sir! Couldn’t have done this without the support of you good folks who’ve been there from the beginning.

  3. I think this is a great idea. This is a huge step. I would love to be a part of sampling for a barrel pick or even just being on an email or phone list for new and interesting bottles in stores. This is awesome y’all. Cheers!

    1. Thank you! We will get our old email chain back up and running soon. I plan on doing a weekly BR round up email on what’s up and coming around town. Looking forward to picking a barrel, just gotta find the right one and we are there!

  4. I am excited to see what the future holds!

In addition to the quarterly events, who is open to informal meet ups and bottle shares? I used to have a group of friends in New Orleans (before I moved to BR) that would meet up – folks would bring opened bottles, bottled water, snacks, etc and we would set a theme for the night.

One night rye, one night single malt, one night barrel proof, etc.

    Anyone interested?
